What Are the Different Types of Hair Extensions?
With so many different types of hair extensions on the market, it’s easy to get confused, so, we decided to share our knowledge and give you a rundown on the different types available.
First of all, there are two major types- synthetic and human hair. Synthetic hair is usually coated with silicone which gives them that glossiness or shine, that fades after a while. These ones are less expensive than the human hair types because of the quality and the lack of things we can do with them for example, they can’t be dyed or styled with heat. They also have a shorter life span, usually lasting around one to three months.
Human hair on the other hand, can be styled and dyed just like you would your own hair. They also look very natural as they blend with your own hair better. However, they cost a lot more than their synthetic counterparts, and last anywhere from six to twelve months.
The Different Types Of Hair Extensions:
- Micro Link/Micro Bead/Loop
These are usually applied by looping the extensions through natural hair and clamping it down with a pair of pliers and a metal bead to finish. A major disadvantage however is that they can result in hair breakage, as a result of the heat from applying the metal rings onto the hair and cause it to burn and break.
Weaves are particularly helpful for girls with really thick hair, as they require a lot of hair to disguise. They are done by first braiding the natural hair into corn rows before attaching the extensions using a needle and a cotton thread. The great thing about weaves are that they cater to all hair types. But if applied too tight however, they can put strain on your scalp and start to feel heavy which is a major reason why they are not recommended for girls with fine hair.
- Tape Hair
These are semi-permanent extensions that they are quick and easy to fit in. The hair is pre-taped and then packed on either side of your hair. They can last anywhere from six to twelve weeks. But while they’re easy to put in and maintain, they are usually low-quality.
- Pre- Bonded Hair
Finally, there are the pre-bonded hair extensions, these are one of the most popular types of hair extensions, and one of the most discreet. However, they can be very damaging because of the application. To install, they’re bonded to your natural hair using adhesives such as glue and keratin which can damage your natural hair. They are also permanent, lasting for up to six months, or until they’re taken out by a professional.
